What We Do

Our Commitment

Since 2015, Africathletics has been working to protect every child’s right to dream.

Education

In Malawi, primary school lasts 8 years dura 8 anni and should begin when children are around 6 years old.

Classes are taught in Chichewa. Although English is essential for enrolling in secondary school, it has been gradually abandoned by the population in recent decades despite remaining a crucial requirement for continuing education.

The high number of students per class - sometimes a single teacher is responsible for up to 300 students! - combined with ineffective teaching methods and the difficult social conditions many children face, results in less than 10% of students, by the end of primary school, having enough English proficiency to move on to secondary school.

We want to help young people acquire the English skills needed to access secondary education With the help of our teachers and additional lessons, we aim to create a fun and stimulating learning environment, giving every child the chance to grow.

Sport

We believe that sport, in all its forms and at any age or level, is a human expression that allows individuals to affirm and realize themselves.

Sport is a place where all dreams are welcome:or those who want to walk and experience their environment in the most natural way possible, for those who want to improve day by day and strive for excellence, and for those who want to discover themselves through movement. Through sport, our young people learn not only to understand and use their bodies effectively, but also to plan , develop methods, set goals and achieve them, rely on others and themselves, and manage their emotions.

Sport is the greatest teacher of perseverance: Africathletics’ mission is to help children learn that with commitment comes progress, and with progress comes self-fulfillment. It’s a lesson that goes beyond the playing field - a set of values that supports growth both at school and in life.

Nutrition

Nutrition is a fundamental human right. Access to adequate food is essential for every individual, but unfortunately, for many, this right is still denied.

The staple diet in Malawi is mainly based on nsima, a staple similar to white cornmeal porridge, chosen for its affordability and filling nature. However, the country also offers a variety of other foods, vegetables, fruit, meat, and fish; which are equally important for a balanced and nutritious diet.

Our commitment focuses on open dialogue with local families to raise awareness about the importance of a balanced diet. Through close collaboration, we design meal plans that take limited financial resources into account, ensuring that every community member has access to nutritious and healthy food.

Scholarships

A scholarship provides comprehensive support for a child throughout the year, covering education, school fees, transportation, healthcare, training, and English and math lessons. The cost of a scholarship is €450.

Scholarships pursue two main goals: promoting children’s health through physical activity and proper nutrition, and supporting the learning of a key language for their personal development: English. Additionally, thanks to our field experience, we have introduced math lessons to provide children with the tools they need for cultural and social enrichment, creating the conditions for complete and conscious growth.

Athletics Project

Since 2015, we’ve been working to create a new, healthy ideal that could prove vital for future generations in the town of Monkey Bay: growing through sport. Thanks to our partners, volunteers, and local coaches, each year 14 children are awarded scholarships and selected for the team.

The goal? To help young athletes grow through track and field, teaching them to understand their bodies, set goals, and overcome their limits. The scholarships provide a full year of afternoon activities and a healthy nutrition program, supported by local vendors. This project requires academic commitment, consistency, and responsibility essential preparation for life’s challenges.

Rugby Project

In December 2023, in collaboration with Mulanje Sport Club, we launched the first female Rugby Sevens team. Thanks to our partners, volunteers, and local coaches, a team of girls aged 11 to 14 was selected to form the team: the Mulanje Sapitwas.

The goal? To give girls the opportunity to learn important life lessons - even the hardest ones - in a safe space, through the values of sport. Discipline, focus, openness, and a sense of responsibility: participating in this project requires strong school performance, commitment, and presence - for themselves and for others.

Dzaleka Project - Refuge Camp UNHCR

Since November 2024, we’ve brought a new light to the Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi with the launch of Breaking Down Barriers: the first track and field project dedicated to young refugees, created in collaboration with UNHCR.

The goal? This initiative aims to give children a real opportunity for growth through sport. In a safe environment, boys and girls learn to believe in themselves, work as a team, and understand the value of commitment. Regular training sessions, moments of sharing, and the development of essential skills become tools to build confidence, self-esteem, and hope. Breaking Down Barriers is more than a sports project: it is an educational path that aims to break down obstacles, build bridges, and plant seeds for the future.
