WHERE WE OPERATE

Malawi is a small country in southeastern Africa, bordered by better-known nations such as Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia. It is landlocked but home to Africa’s third largest lake - Lake Malawi - which stretches along the Great Rift Valley.

The country is divided into three regions: North, Central, and South. Located south of the equator, Malawi has opposite seasons to the northern hemisphere: during the European summer, it’s winter there - a dry and fairly warm season - while during our winter, it’s their summer, a rainy season that transforms the country into a lush green landscape.

A former British colony, Malawi is a predominantly agricultural nation with a densely populated and fast-growing population. About three-quarters of its people - especially in rural areas - live on less than $1.50 a day. The town of Monkey Bay, with about 15,000 inhabitants (as of 2008), lies on the shores of the lake in the southern part of the country. Further south lies Mount Mulanje, famous for its impressive peak, one of Malawi’s most important natural attractions. nazione principalmente agricola con una popolazione densamente concentrata e in forte crescita.

One of the most serious challenges Malawi faces is HIV, with around 12% of the population living with HIV or AIDS, which remains one of the leading causes of death. The average life expectancy is 54 years.

Why Malawi?

The Africathletics project was born in Malawi for reasons that go far beyond geography.

As one of the poorest countries in the world, with people living in extremely difficult economic and social conditions, especially in rural areas, the need for support is undeniable. Our encounter with Malawi was somewhat accidental.

During a trip to Africa, we ended up there almost by chance. But once we arrived, we were immediately captivated by the warmth, kindness, and extraordinary spirit of its people. It’s no coincidence that Malawians are known throughout Africa as the “People of the Sun.” Their energy, optimism, and resilience in overcoming daily challenges perfectly reflect the image of a country that, though marked by poverty, continues to look ahead with hope and determination. dalla bellezza delle persone e dalla loro straordinaria solarità.

The Africathletics project was born out of this special bond out of the desire to support a community that, despite its hardships, manages to smile every single day. dare una mano a una comunità che, nonostante le sfide, riesce a sorridere ogni giorno.
